Current Activity
Here’s the latest activity in energy storage in Nova Scotia.
Alderney 5 Project
This underground seasonal thermal storage system connects five municipal buildings on the Dartmouth waterfront. It is the first large-scale application of geothermal seasonal cold-energy storage anywhere in the world. The system collects cold energy from seawater during winter months to chill an underground rock mass and then uses the stored thermal energy to meet air conditioning needs in warmer months by using 100 per cent renewable energy.
Surrette Battery Company Limited
Located in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Surrette Batteries produces a wide range of batteries for use in railroad, marine, motive power and renewable energy applications throughout the world.
Lightsail Energy
LightSail is applying thermodynamics (the science of heat transfer and utilization) to make power available when it’s needed, not just when it’s available. Their innovative work is made possible through Innovacorp’s Cleantech fund.
This game changing renewable energy storage technology is currently being researched and developed in Nova Scotia (learn more). This would potentially allow for electricity from wind power to be stored and utilized when needed.
