Current Activity
Here’s the latest activity on wind energy in Nova Scotia…and how you can be part of it.
As of September 2013, there was 321 MW of installed capacity from wind generation in the province. View a map of existing projects and those under development here.
Large-Scale Projects
The Renewable Electricity Plan initially called for an additional 600 gigawatt hours of larger-scale renewable energy projects to meet our 2015 commitment of getting 25 per cent of our electricity from renewable sources; half to come from independent power producers and the remainder from Nova Scotia Power.
With the recent loss of load from the province’s pulp and paper sector, it has been determined that we no longer need the additional 300 gigawatt hours that had been reserved for Nova Scotia Power.
The procurement process for independent power producers (or IPPs) was overseen by Nova Scotia's Renewable Energy Administrator (REA). As of August 2012, the REA awarded three renewable wind-energy contracts totaling 335 gigawatt hours of electricity. These IPPs can produce electricity to sell to the Province's utilities or to export markets. For more information on the REA process. visit our Commerical Renewables page.
The province’s electric utility, Nova Scotia Power, has also procured wind energy projects. Learn more about these projects on our Commercial Renewables page.
