Geoscience Data and Maps
Nova Scotia's offshore geoscience research is provided by an arm of the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB), which is the independent joint agency of the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia responsible for the regulation of petroleum activities in the Nova Scotia Offshore Area.
As part of its mandate, the CNSOPB collects, stores, interprets, and distributes geoscientific information about offshore Nova Scotia.
Additionally, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC)-Alantic is a source of integrated knowledge and advice on marine geoscience, with specific concentration on Canada's coastal and offshore landmass. GSC-Atlantic’s BASIN database contains a wealth of geological, geophysical, and engineering information related to many years of petroleum exploration, primarily offshore northern and eastern Canada.
The Play Fairway Analysis study also provides an industry standard picture of the sub-sea geology offshore and has assessed its oil and gas potential. This $15 million study was commissioned by the Nova Scotia Department of Energy as part of our commitment to support investment in our offshore energy sector.
